Leather Furniture Maintenance Tips

The Difference of Leather Furniture

If you are considering purchasing new living room furniture, you may be wondering if upholstery or leather is right for you. This largely comes down to a matter of personal taste, as well as what your existing decor looks like (you want furniture that will match it). And, if you are leaning toward leather, you may have some questions before purchasing about how it differs from upholstery. These questions are usually in the area of cleaning and maintaining leather furniture.

The good news is that leather is built to last. It is a natural product, which upholstery is, as well (if it is made from natural plant fibers). However, it is much tougher than upholstery, and harder to damage. As it ages, a natural patina comes out on leather, which makes it even more beautiful than when it was new. Leather furniture is basically something you buy to keep forever, because it can last that long.

Because leather is so durable and long-lasting, it makes a great investment. You don’t have to be rich to buy leather, either. It’s durability, and the likelihood you will have it forever, makes it incredibly economical in the long run. It is also easier to maintain and care for than you may think. You should not be concerned about keeping your leather furniture clean and looking attractive. Here are some easy and effective leather furniture maintenance tips.

Leather Furniture Maintenance Tips

Dusting and Vacuuming are Your Go-To Cleaning Methods.

With most leather furniture that is getting a normal amount of use, all you really need to keep it clean is a dust cloth and a vacuum cleaner. Once a week or so, dust the furniture with a dry cloth. Then, vacuum in the crevices (where food crumbs may hide) and along the bottom (where dirt, dust, and pet hair may accumulate). Once you do that, you are good to go for the week, and your furniture will look excellent.

Put on a Leather Conditioner.

Rub a good quality leather conditioner into your leather furniture once or twice a year. This will help keep it soft and supple. Without a little conditioning every now and then, your leather furniture could become dry, brittle and uncomfortable, and pieces could flake off of it. A leather conditioner will prevent this, and you really don’t have to do it often to get picture perfect results.

Keep Your Leather Furniture Out of the Sun.

Leather furniture is not outdoor furniture. You must keep it inside, and keep it out of direct sunlight. This is because the color (whether natural or dyed) on your leather furniture can fade a bit if exposed to regular sunlight.

Clean in a Hidden Area First.

You never quite know how leather will respond to a new cleaning method, such as a new dust cloth or a new leather conditioner. Just in case your leather furniture isn’t up for whatever new cleaning method you have planned for it, always try it in a small, hidden area of the furniture first. This way, if it leaves behind a stain or other damage to the leather, no one will ever notice (and you will know to avoid using that method on your furniture).

Buff Off Scratches.

While it is unlikely, there is a chance your leather may get scratched. While a large scratch or rip will require professional repair, you can fix a small one on your own. Just use a chamois, or even your own clean fingers, to softly and gently buff the scratch. Continue buffing until it disappears. If you need to, you can use a slightly moistened cloth or your fingertips to get rid of tougher scratches. Just make sure you use distilled water only, and only in a very small amount. Let it air dry when you are done.

Leather Furniture Maintenance Tips are Easy to Follow

These leather furniture maintenance tips are easy to follow and use. And, honestly, it does not take much to keep your leather furniture clean and looking its best. It is a durable material, and will not scratch, tear, or stain easily, and is naturally resistant to dust.

With just a little bit of light regular cleaning and maintenance, you can make sure your leather furniture always looks its best. Make a regular schedule of maintenance for it, and you will never forget to do it. Your leather furniture will appreciate your efforts, and so will you, especially when your guests are impressed.
