Over the last year, the pandemic has meant that many people are spending more time than ever in their own homes, turning them into a place that needs to function in different ways than it had before. In this article on 2021 design trends to expect, we’re going to look at how this change may have affected the trends in interior design and what styles will continue into the new year.

Outdoor Spaces

People have found themselves to be at home more than usual, with many working from home and perhaps choosing to stay in rather than go out. Because of this, outdoor areas have become increasingly important as a way to change our environment and get some fresh air. What can sometimes be underused and unthought-of space is now getting some focus, with predicted demands for fire pits and outdoor cooking equipment so people can remain using these areas throughout the winter months. Even if the outside area is small, such as a balcony, there is a need for people to use this space to escape for a coffee break away from the screen or a way to get some air on their lunch break. This has led to an increase in demand for outdoor furniture to help enable people to better design their outside area.

Wellbeing

Following on for the need for an outside space is also the need to create indoor spaces that provides wellness in the home. For many, our homes have been functioning as more than just a place to relax, sleep, and eat. People are starting to think about creating spaces in their homes that will allow them to improve their mental health. Working at the dining room table or on the sofa loses its novelty and comfort quite quickly, so people are looking at designs for their home that will allow them to create a dedicated home office area as a solution for when they don’t have a home office room. This mentally draws a line between work and home life, helping people to shut off from work.

Sustainable Design and Materials

One of the most important 2021 design trends to expect is our increasing focus on sustainability; this has been a hot topic for many years but is now becoming much more of a focal point in design. There is a growing concern about where things are coming from, who made it, and what material is it made from. People are starting to buy into products and companies that support ethical and sustainable production. Brands are also beginning to look at using recycled products such as plastic bags to create furniture and other pieces for peoples’ homes. As ever, sustainable materials such as repurposed wood continue to be used widely in interior design with uses such as furniture, flooring, workshops, desks, shelving and wall paneling.
