Should you Flip a Mattress?

Should you Flip a Mattress

Have you had those nights where you can’t get comfortable? Tossing and turning? The easiest way to cure those achy blues could be a simple flip! Should you flip a mattress?

Times are Changing:

Yes, times are changing, and so are our mattresses. For a long time, the furniture industry has recommended flipping a mattress to expand the life of a mattress and promote comfort.

However, in these modern times, not only has fashion and design changed but the construction of mattresses has also. Not all mattresses should be flipped, if at all!

Only certain mattresses can be flipped to improve comfort and extend durability. Below are great tips, helping you decide if you own a mattress that can be flipped.

To Flip or Not to Flip:

When we discuss flipping a mattress, do we understand why this was recommended to begin with? The construction of mattresses has changed dramatically.

If you own a mattress mentioned below, some can be flipped, others cannot. We explain why below.

Innerspring Mattress:

This type has been around since the beginning of time and is the most common mattress style. They are available anywhere and often the most inexpensive mattress.

The core of this mattress is in the name. ‘Spring’. Built with metal wiring and springs for support, these mattresses lose their gusto quickly.

Forcing the owner to ‘flip’. An innerspring is safe to flip and rotate to improve comfort.

However, if you own a pillowtop, you’re only able to rotate your mattress. A rule of thumb is to rotate or flip your innerspring mattress every 6 to 12 months.

Memory Foam Mattress:

The memory foam mattress can be a great addition to your bedroom. Famous for its supportive structures and comfort.

But should you flip a mattress that is memory foam? The short answer is NO. Mainly, due to how these mattresses are made.

Normally the foam is embedded into the top of the mattress and not underneath. So, if you choose to flip it, you will not benefit from the memory foam.

Rotating your memory foam mattress is a safer choice. Experts say rotating it 1 or 2 times a year can reshape the foam and extend the life of your mattress.

Hybrid Mattress:

Another type of memory foam but with several extra layers. Two materials set memory foam and hybrid mattresses apart. Gel and springs.

A hybrid has at least 5 layers of foam and gel to cradle your body, providing ultimate support. However, beneath all those layers are springs to support the frame.

Can a Hybrid mattress be flipped? Yes! If you own a ‘Dual Hybrid’ you will enjoy support whether you flip or rotate this type of mattress.

Although, if your Hybrid is NOT a dual, you can only rotate to ensure you are getting the best support. Mattress specialists recommend flipping a Hybrid mattress 1 time a year.

A Flipping Guide:

The three groups of mattresses outlined above are flippable mattresses. Manufacturers today are constantly improving the way we sleep by adding gel, foam, springs, and more to our mattresses.

Labels attached to our mattresses are also important. They do not only tell us how to clean them but if they can be flipped and when.

Why Should You Flip a Mattress?

No matter how often you decide to flip or rotate your mattress, try to keep a schedule. Doing this prematurely can make your mattress lose its gusto!

What does flipping do for you?

1. Improves body support

2. Regaining softness in areas that began sagging

3. Increases the lifespan of the mattress

4. Distribute weight evenly

These are the main reasons people decide to flip their mattresses. Allow your body time to get used to its newly dispersed comfort. After you toss your mattress you should feel the immediate effects take place.

Whether it’s a memory foam mattress, hybrid, or standard innerspring, by turning it over you should feel the contour change take place. Just like the first day you purchased it!

Rotate vs Flip:

In theory, all mattresses should be rotated to keep the firmness or softness you desire for a restful night’s sleep.

Experts say sleeping positions have a lot to do with the comfort of your mattress. If you toss and turn, your ‘side’ will be worn down faster than someone that stays generally still.

With memory foam or gel-infused mattresses their entire design is to wrap your body like a soft hug.

After a while, the same sleeping position can pose wear and tear on your foam. Causing it to deteriorate or lack support where you need it most.

So, should you flip a mattress or rotate it? Rotating, a mattress first is the best option. Allow the softness or sturdiness of your mattress to reclaim its shape. Flipping should be a last-ditch effort to recover its luster.

Time to Hang it Up:

When flipping and rotating are NOT working, it may be time to purchase a new mattress. The mattress store in Philadelphia carries various types and styles to fit your bedroom perfectly.

How to know when your mattress needs an upgrade?

1. Severe Sagging (Fabric, Threads, Foam)

2. Noisy (Springs are Going Bad)

3. It’s Interfering with Your Sleep

4. The Outline of Your Body Can Be Seen in The Mattress

5. Age (older than 8 years)

You can never go wrong with helpful hints on mattress care. It’s undoubtfully the largest furniture piece people own.

It’s important to regularly check your mattress for the common issues outlined above. You owe it to yourself and may get more sleep doing so!
