You can easily move things around to make this part of your home more functional and welcoming for your guests. No matter how large or small your living space might be, read on to discover how to arrange the living room for entertaining, so you can enjoy this part of your home during any occasion.

Create a Clear Path

When you have people over, you want to make sure that they can easily move around the room. Move sofas, chairs, or tables out of the way to designate a single walking path that leads in and out of the living room. This simple tip will keep people from bumping into each other or creating a traffic jam. You can place two console tables across from each other or use the sofa as a “blockade” to create a walking lane into the space. The key is to arrange everything so it’s easy for your guests to move around without feeling cluttered or cramped.

Keep Keep Things Close Together

When thinking about how to arrange the living room for entertaining, you want to create a sense of togetherness and intimacy. Avoid arranging your furniture so far apart that people feel like they need to shout across the room at each other won’t encourage conversations. Try to place a few chairs and a coffee table closely together for a nice conversation area. This doesn’t mean that your furniture needs to be crowded or right on top of each other. Simply move your sofa, loveseat, table, and chairs in front of this focal point to designate a single gathering area. If you’re not planning on watching TV, you can still use it to help you create a guide for the layout. Winter gatherings are always much better in front of a fireplace. Be sure to rearrange your furniture so that it’s nearby the fireplace for a toasty and cozy entertaining moment in your home.

Provide Plenty of Surface Space

When you’re entertaining guests in your living room, there will likely be a few drinks and food involved. To ensure that the room is accommodating, check to make sure that there is plenty of surface space available for guests to put their drinks or plates of food on. Keep end tables on either side of the sofa or loveseat, making sure that they are at arm’s length. Cocktail ottomans or large coffee tables are other excellent options for plenty of surface area to put cups and plates on. A lift-top coffee table is a great option if you plan to serve food in the living room, so your guests can relax on the sofa while they enjoy their meals or appetizers.

Make it Bright

It’s important to make sure that your living room is bright when you have guests over. Open your curtains and blinds to allow plenty of natural sunlight into the room. You can also add some table lamps to a few different tables to add more lighting. Upgrade your overhead fixtures to something with a higher level of illumination. Task lighting like floor lamps can also be a great choice. Place a floor lamp in the corner of the living room next to a chair, so your guests will have a bit of light in darker areas of the room.
