How to Arrange Furniture in a Living Room Dining Room Combo

When you have an open concept living space, it can be difficult to break the rooms up into separate areas. Below are some great tips on how to arrange furniture in a living room and dining room combo!

First, you want to separate the rooms into their own spaces. Even with an open concept, this look can be done strategically by how to arrange items, hang pictures, and even incorporate area rugs!

Draw the Line:

Now, this doesn’t mean to get out a permanent marker and physically draw a line in the room. But, if this is something you need to separate the area accordingly, people have often used toilet paper to divide their rooms. (Yes, really!)

Once you figure out where you want to begin the separation, it’s time to arrange the furniture to create different living spaces.

Large Furniture:

One of the most popular ways on how to arrange furniture in a living room and dining room combo is big furniture!

Here are some examples of furniture that can be used to ‘draw the line’ between your dining room and living room.

1. Sofa or Loveseat – A 3-person sofa works best with this idea. It’s longer and can be used as the main divider.

Have the back of your sofa facing the dining room. Take a walk around the back to ensure there is adequate walking space.

If you have a sectional, place the back facing the dining room, and the curved section moving toward the longest wall. This will separate your rooms and also give an illusion that your living space is bigger than it is!

2. Sofa Table – A tall, sleek, longer table can also be a room divider. Placing a large accent piece on the table like flowers, sculptures, or candles. Doing this will draw the eye to the living area if you can no longer see right through to the other room.

3. Accent Chairs – This idea works best with 2 chairs. Place these two chairs close together and add a small conversational table. With the back of the chairs facing the dining room, it will surely separate the two rooms.

These are just a few ideas for large furniture pieces to use when dividing an open concept into two separate rooms.

Creating Space:

Whether you live in an apartment or decide on an open floor plan, it’s important to create enough space to walk. When dividing the room, be sure to walk through and around your large pieces having enough space to maneuver.

You want the flow of your rooms to feel open, but not cramped. Creating a walkway or a main traffic area helps divide the rooms. Here are some more tips on how to arrange furniture in a living room and dining room combo!

1. Rugs

Accent rugs can separate two spaces easily. For your dining area, you can place a large rug under your table. This look works even if you have carpet.

Try using different fabrics or a patterned design to draw the eye. By creating the walking area behind your sofa’s back and leading into the dining room, an area rug will divide the eating space and living space easily.

Placing a rug under the front legs of your sofa can also divide the room. Especially if you’re not a fan of rugs under tables.

Area rugs are versatile and can be moved and arranged in several different ways to give you the look and abstract design you’re looking for!

2. Art

In some homes, you will find the longest wall has several pictures cluttering the wall. By doing this, you are not creating two spaces, but one big space.

To create two different living spaces, try using only two or three different art pieces. Large pieces tend to help with closing an open concept.

By placing one large piece on the smallest dining room wall. Add another large piece to the longest wall in the living area.

This will break up the room and make it look like two separate rooms. (Tip: Doing this can also make your rooms look larger.)

3. Color

When you are arranging your dining room furniture in Philadelphia, color is an important factor. Most people stay with a certain theme and don’t use bold colors or accents. But, when you are creating two separate rooms, you want bold!

Even if your wall colors are the same, try to change up the accent colors in each room. Having darker furniture with light walls can create a bigger space.

Try using a bright bold color in the living room, and a calmer accent in the dining room. The statement less is more is true with this tip!

Making it Work:

With these suggestions, it will be easy to turn your open concept into two different living areas. The best part about arranging furniture is finding the right place for each piece.

Creating space and room to walk, tricking the eye with rugs and wall art, or placing a sofa in the middle of the room. These suggestions and more can help anyone transform their living space.

Another tip to save time and effort is drawing a design before moving anything. Take a piece of paper and draw how you want to arrange your space.

You don’t have to be a designer to do this. But it can help you determine how much space you will have leftover before you start arranging furniture!
