holiday events in Philadelphia

The holiday season is fast approaching, and it’s always a wonderful time of year to spend with family and friends. If you live in the Philadelphia area, there’s no shortage of amazing things to do. Whether you attend a festive parade or shop at small local businesses, Philly has something to offer everyone. Before you make plans this Thanksgiving and Christmas, read on to learn more about some awesome holiday events in Philadelphia you should check out.

The Philadelphia Thanksgiving Parade

Kids of all ages (adults included) will love this annual parade. When it comes to ringing in the holiday season, there’s no better way than with a Thanksgiving parade, and Philly hosts a fantastic one that the entire family will appreciate and enjoy. Celebrating its 100th Anniversary, this annual holiday event in Philadelphia is the oldest Thanksgiving parade in the country. Many residents here cherish it as a local Philadelphia tradition. The parade stretches for 1.4 miles and includes a variety of colorful floats, giant balloons, and lots of local performances. You’ll enjoy everything from clowns and dance groups to choirs and marching bands during the parade. And of course, Santa himself will arrive at the end of the parade to ring in the holiday season. This is a fantastic, family-friendly event that your kids will love.

Small Business Saturday

If you enjoy supporting local businesses, be sure to take part in Small Business Saturday, a national event devoted to spending money at small businesses. This annual event takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and encourages residents to support their local small businesses and local vendors. Be sure to stop by Grossman Furniture to get the latest selection of high-quality furniture on Small Business Saturday! The benefits of shopping small include supporting the local economy, creating new jobs, and it’s also a wonderful way to show your support for businesses throughout the Philadelphia community and around the country. You can also find some great deals on this special shopping day since many businesses offer special discounts and incentives for you to come and shop. Bring the whole family by Grossman Furniture to find great deals on furnishings for every room of your home.

Holiday Market

For more local shopping, be sure to visit the Philadelphia Holiday Market, located in Dilworth Park. This annual market is open throughout the entire holiday season and showcases a variety of local vendors and artists. There’s something for everyone here including delicious food, artwork, and much more. Bring the kids along and enjoy special holiday foods and the beautiful white tents topped with lit Herrnhut stars. This market is a fabulous way to purchase special gifts for loved ones that come straight from the Philadelphia area. You’ll find everything from handmade ornaments and original paintings to jewelry, baby clothing, pottery, and more. Over 45 vendors are featured, and the market is conveniently located just outside City Hall.

Light Shows

Of course, the holiday events in Philadelphia wouldn’t be the same without a few incredible light shows. Families love flocking to the City of Brotherly Love to see the various light shows throughout the region including the Macy’s Christmas Light Show, which has been a tradition in the area since 1956. The variety of outdoor light displays has grown immensely over the years and includes a special Deck the Hall Light Show at City Hall. Bring the kids to experience the magic of the holidays at several light shows throughout the area. One of our favorite shows is the Franklin Square Holiday Festival & Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show just a few blocks away from our furniture store in Old City Philadelphia.

LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo is a fantastic light show that the entire family will love. This special event starts just before Thanksgiving and continues through the holiday season on select dates. The unique light display transforms the zoo into a multimedia spectacle with music, lights, and more as well as images of animals and trees coming to life. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate the coming season with the entire family while learning about nature. Make sure you grab a hot chocolate while you’re there! If you want to get into the holiday spirit, check out the incredible Macy’s light show that features dancing lights surrounding a gigantic Christmas Tree. The presentation is accompanied by the famous Wannamaker Organ and includes narration by Julie Andrews. This show is free for the entire family and takes place every two hours during Macy’s regular hours of operation.

Christmas Festivities

If you want to celebrate the Christmas season classically, don’t miss a performance of The Nutcracker performed by the Pennsylvania Ballet. For younger kids, there are plenty of fun holiday events in Philadelphia around City Hall and Dilworth park including ice skating and the Deck the Hall Light Show. The Philly Holiday Tree is also a beautiful sight to behold and all the downtown area is filled with festive lights, fun activities, and plenty of bustling excitement. Don’t forget to stop by Christmas Village in LOVE Park where you’ll enjoy over 80 wooden booths featuring both local and international merchants. Shop for winter apparel, holiday trimmings for your trees, and handmade toys for the kids. Of course, there’s also plenty of delicious treats the entire family will enjoy, too.

The Comcast Holiday Spectacular is another Can’t-miss event in the Philly area. This unique event combines the Pennsylvania Ballet’s The Nutcracker performance with a sleigh ride over the city. The magic is presented on a large screen where everyone can view it as they enjoy 15 minutes of fun, music, and wonder. Over 2 million people have enjoyed this Christmas experience since it first debuted in 2008. Make sure you check out the Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest located on the Delaware Waterfront. This gigantic attraction includes fire pits, a fun Kids Lodge arcade, and a cozy restaurant and bar for the adults to enjoy. There’s also delicious sweets, hearty food, and tons more that are all centered around the skating rink for tons of winter and holiday fun. You’ll also enjoy a simply incredible view of the Ben Franklin Bridge, which looks especially beautiful at night.
